Joyful Sounds Music Studio is now accepting registrations for beginner and intermediate homeschool band.
We meet at 3108, Hwy#2 in Fall River on Wednesday afternoons beginning September 12. Returning or experienced players will meet from 1:00-1:45, and beginning students will meet from 2:00-2:45. The first day of beginning band will be an information meeting to answer questions and to help determine which instrument would be best for each student.
Instruments include: flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, baritone, trombone and percussion. The cost per class is $8, to be paid in monthly installations September through May. Families are responsible for providing an instrument, stand, and method book.

Blessed Beyond Measure
I am indescribably proud of the band's performance at our studio recital last night. Everyone looked professional, behaved with great respect for other performers, arrived on time, came to the front without prompting when it was our turn, was very focused...and gave an outstanding performance of our pieces! That was absolutely the best playing I have heard from this group, and possibly from any beginner band.
This first year with JSCB has been an immensely rewarding experience for me. My passion for band, which had been laying dormant for a few years, has been not only rekindled, but fanned into a roaring bonfire. I feel a rush of excitement when a band member "nails" a part with which he or she has been struggling. I love the music and the satisfaction and beauty of transforming the initial cacophony into structure and harmony.
More than that, I have met new people who I now consider dear friends. I delight in getting to know the personality of each band member. I appreciate their respect for each other and for me, their diligence, and their encouragement of each other. I am honoured and blessed by the times parents have brought me a cup of coffee or a loaf of warm homemade bread, looked after my younger children during or after rehearsal, accompanied us on piano, taken an active role in their children's practising, or have expressed appreciation through kind words and gifts.
All of this--the music and everything that flows out of our common goal and stretches beyond--this is community. Just as every line in a composition is vital to the integrity of the piece, so every person in the band is integral to its success. Perhaps that is what I love most about music: the community it symbolizes, the community it requires, and the community it creates.

June Recital
We will be playing at the Joyful Sounds year-end recital on Tuesday, June 5 at the Gordon Snow Community Centre in Fall River. I am already excited for what will surely be a great evening! The teachers are even working on a fun little surprise...

Christmas recital
What a fantastic job everyone did playing in the studio recital last night! I was so proud of you all for your courage, concentration, and conduct. I received many compliments on your playing. Thank you for a great concert and a terrific semester. We will start our winter semester on January 11.

Practice Tips and Upcoming Events
Practising Tips:
Things are sounding so good! Please practise page 9 in your books this week, especially Good King Wenceslas. Also try playing Jolly Old Saint Nicolas on page 10, and Jingle Bells on page 12.
Aim for long notes that float on one stream of air. Don't stop your air between notes, simply interrupt the airflow with your tongue!
Check that your posture is correct. Lengthen your spine and keep both feet flat on the floor.
Are the corners of your mouth firm? Don't let your lips stick out.
If a line is frustrating you, take a deep breath, then break it down into manageable amounts. First, only clap the rhythm while counting "1,2,3,4" Next, say and "ghost play" the notes (no sound from the instrument--just use your fingers. Then SLOWLY play through the line and speed up gradually as you are able.
For each selection that you play, decide which bar is the trickiest. Practise only those 4 notes until you can play them well. Then play the whole line.
